Osteopathy

Many people suffer years of pain believing nothing can be done, but in a great many cases osteopathy can be highly effective. Osteopathy uses a holistic approach to clinical examination and treatment that considers the whole person, and not just painful symptoms. In diagnosing problems, osteopaths apply many of the procedures used in conventional medicine, but our strength lies in our additional ability to to assess the individual from a mechanical, functional and structural perspective.

Osteopathy aims straight for the root cause of pain and seeks to remedy problems by drawing on a wide range of gentle treatments, such as specific soft tissue massage, gentle movements and precise adjustments, suited to the individual. This enables the body to restore itself to good health and better function.

Benefits of Osteopathy:

  • Pain reliefistock_000006147716small_31
  • Promotes healing
  • Adaptation to stress
  • Reduces inflammation
  • Rehabilitation after injury
  • Prevention of further injury
  • Improves movement and flexibility
  • Enhances your wellness and health
  • Reduces reoccurring health problems
  • Improves spinal posture and alignment
  • Improves lymphatic and venous drainage

Appointments & Treatment:

It is not necessary to have a GP referral prior to osteopathic treatment.

The first consultation will consist of:

  • Discussion of your current problem
  • Discussion of your medical history
  • Postural and physical examination
  • Clinical tests to diagnose your problem
  • Explanation of diagnosis & prognosis
  • Explanation of treatment approach
  • Commencement of the treatment
  • Bespoke stretching and strength training exercises

On most occasions and for the purposes of examination and treatment you may be asked to undress down to your underwear.

How many treatments will I need?

The amount of treatment required will be discussed following your assessment and will depend upon your condition; as long existing conditions generally require more attention.

New patient appointments require 80 minutes with follow up appointments lasting up to 40 minutes and typically occur twice a month but there are some instances where weekly appointments are necessary.

Maintenance Treatments

Awareness of poor posture, occupational stresses, sedentary life styles, lifting children, carrying shopping and juggling work with home life have led many patients to recognise that their bodies struggle with the rigours of modern day living. Having completed treatment many patients return monthly or quarterly to ensure they remain in good health; preventing the reoccurrence of previous problems and ensures that new conditions do not arise.

Prescribed Exercises

All patients will be given a bespoke exercise plan to help manage their pain. This will be provided via ‘the exercise prescriber’ which will deliver videos via email and will contain detailed descriptions of stretches and strengthenning exercises.
